Historic Catholic Church

Adjoining SurfWatch is a historic catholic Church which in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s served the Mangamaunu area. Given back to the local Maori people in the 1940’s or 50’s, the land is used now by local Maori as a “Marae” or meeting place. The land SurfWatch occupies lies on top of an old river terrace, a location rich in soil, and with good lookouts over the sea and lower lands. The terrace was home to ancestors of the local people.
