In order to appreciate the size of the surf in these pictures, be aware of the normal or calmer surf conditions in similar pictures in the gallery. A few times of the year, we get huge waves which batter the shore. Often causing damage to the coastal highway, these waves are fascinating to watch from SurfWatch or along the coast.

Ocean spray

Produced by the daunting “Norwest” winds, occasionally our guests witness memorable “Ocean Spray” shows. Norwest wind conditions occur ahead of Southerly fronts producing warm, dry, and frighteningly gusty winds that roll and twist over the mountains towards the ocean. This turbulence literally rips the water off the ocean into awesome sea spray patterns.

Moon

The Moon. Wow the moon from SurfWatch. So far, we have not been able to capture pictures that can do justice to the moon at SurfWatch. Rising out of the Kaikoura pastel sky, it is huge and gorgeous. Enjoy cocktail and dinner moon rises! In the quiet of the night the moon shadow entertains you with it’s sensuous dance across ocean ripples, or soft light on the winter snow capped mountains.

Mountain views

Mountains, mountains. They make Kaikoura so special. Rising to over 8,000 feet, these are the real alpine deal. Edmund Hillary trained here in his younger days. Go-hard skiers heli-ski here. A few keen and brave trampers hikers make it to the top of the easier peaks. The rest are for experienced mountain climbers. Not recommended for most us! Southerly storms dump snow on these mountains at any time of the year, though most visitors never see the stunning winter beauty.
