20th Feb 2017

On Monday 14th November 2016, a strong earthquake struck in our area. The earthquake did not adversely affect SurfWatch, and we are operating normally.

WhaleWatch, Dolphin Encounter, and Seal Swim are all running limited trips, but the harbour is being fixed quickly. Wings Over Whales is operating normally. About half the restaurants are in town are open. The earthquake aftershocks are more or less gone. The town is much quieter than normal, so those who come to Kaikoura will find something extra special. If you miss seeing Kaikoura, you will miss one of the South Island's major scenic attractions!

Access to Kaikoura is via SH1 from the south, and via the Inland Road, SH70. There are night time restrictions on SH1. Please leave Christchurch by 5:00pm and do not stop along the way to ensure you get through. The road closes daily at Goose Bay (about 15 kms south of Kaikoura) STRICTLY at 8:00 pm.

State Highway One (SH1) north of SurfWatch (Mangamaunu) will remain closed for several months. The road closure is about 2 kms north of SurfWatch. Full details are here: NZTA Travel Information

Considering so few people were hurt, this has been a very exciting and fascinating once in a lifetime event. The landscape in our entire area has changed. Until SH1 to the north gets fixed, SurfWatch is about 2km from the end of the road.
